Inspiring Lines: A Stripes Story

The Breton stripe, introduced in 1858 as the uniform for the French navy, inspired Coco Chanel, and the blue-and-white combination has long been a banner of seaside-inspired style.

This season, our head of design, Elliot Staples, used colors, combinations, scale and directions to give one of his longtime favorite patterns a fresh new feel. Here are a few styles that make it easy to wear them your way.

Different Sizes and Directions

Mid-range stripes with a border of fine stripes create a color-block effect in our mixed-stripes double-faced top. In navy blue and cream or mahogany and cream, it’s nautical nouveau with a seriously playful feel.

In our Wearever side-inset striped tunic, horizontal stripes on the front and back meet vertical stripes on the sides to add visual interest and subtle slimming and lengthening effects that are flattering on everyone.

“The stripe is a part of my personal style uniform. A lover of water, the sea and coastal living, I’ve always been drawn to the simplicity and elegance of the seafaring Breton stripe.” —Elliot Staples.

New Color Concepts

Multicolor variegated stripes combine the season’s new palette of fresh green, salmon pink and navy to add an unexpected and energetic feel. It’s in a border-stripe maxi dress, a simple boat-neck sweater and a textured neckerchief. These three options alone will add a spring-forward lift to your wardrobe.

For Sport or Simply Relaxing

In Fit, stripes transform activewear into casual wear to pair with jeans, pants or leggings. Contrasting dusk and navy blue create a modern monochromatic look on our popover top and tee.
